Fun Activity To Try With Little Ones
Lately, we’ve been hooked on Cookie Monster’s Foodie Truck show on YouTube. There’s just something about our favourite Sesame Street blue monster that makes us want to shout in his signature deep voice: ME WANT CoooOOOKkkieEEEEEE!
So it was a matter of time that we put on our aprons to try our hand at baking vegan chocolate chip cookies.
Naturally I searched for vegan versions void of eggs, dairy and nuts to cater to Corey’s food allergies 🥜 🌰 . Broadly they seem to fall into 2 methods of making, one using vegetable oil, the other using vegan butter to form the dough.
One Bowl, No chill Method Even Little Hands Can Help
With two boisterous kids who insist Cookie Monster joins in the cooking (watch our YouTube video below to see our hilarious attempt at filming our process), my preference is always to try the recipes with the EASIEST prep so that they can join in the fun.
This means being able to dump all ingredients into one bowl, mixing everything together and VOILA cookie dough done. Then, its just scoop and bake immediately without any waiting nor fuss.
making this oiled based version also meant no need to chill dough.
Less washing = happy mum.
So here’s Version 1.0 of our vegan chocolate chip cookie adventures.
Prep best done before young kids join in
- SIEVE all dry ingredients beforehand
- measure out wet ingredients vegetable oil and plant milk
- clear out the workspace so ALL kids get a good view vantage
- Plan out before starting who gets to do what and more importantly for HOW LONG
Not following the above points can lead to disastrous mayhem that has results in tears, clothes pulling, whining protests and even extreme declarations of disowning familial ties.

First Episode of our Monster Pretend Cooking Show
Cookie Monster makes Cookieeeeeeeesssss!
Watch our hilarious intro video clip of us mixing and then cutting to a ‘commercial break’ because the brown sugar was too lumpy for Corey to mix. Then the kids got distracted with Cookie Monster and lost interest in the baking altogether. They then decided that it was better that I finish making the cookies. Oh and then reminded me to call for them when the cookies are done.
To fix clumpy brown sugar
If you do end up with clumpy brown sugar (like us in our video), don’t panic. Its a quick two minute fix. Simply place the brown sugar in a microwave safe bowl. Cover bowl loosely with a damp paper towel. Then microwave for 10 seconds interval till the sugar is soft. Easy.
Its simple and took me all of one minute to fix our clumpy brown sugar, but by then the boys got distracted and left me to finish baking #mumlife
If you prefer a nice shaped round cookie then chill the dough for at least half an hour before shaping. But if you are impatient like my kids, then just scoop and use spoons to form cookies onto a greased proof-lined. This dough can be frozen and made ahead of time but I would freeze after the cookies have been formed on a baking tray to facilitate easy baking the next round. Don't overbake oiled-based cookies as they become rock hard. These bake fairly quickly so just have the kids set a timer and they will be waiting intently for the cookies to come out in front of the oven.
